Finally, the weather held off long enough for the Green's staff at both Charlestown and Shortland Waters to prepare their courses suitable for Round 5 to be conducted on Sunday March 20.
Charlestown hosted Division 1 - with Division 2 at Shortland Waters
This pennant series has been the closest in both Divisions that most of us can remember.
In Division 1 - Newcastle were certain of a place in the final. However Charlestown, Merewether and Belmont all had chances to fill the 2nd spot if results went their way. This left Waratah and Toronto to playoff to avoid relegation to Division 2 - this would be the first time for either teams.
An unexpected win by a clear margin by Charlestown over front runners, Newcastle ensured that they secured the second finals spot.
Merewether required a 6/2 margin over Belmont to displace Charlestown - but could only manage a 4 all draw with Belmont.
In the playoff for relegation - it was as close as everyone expected with Waratah and Toronto finishing 4 all at the conclusion of 18 holes. In accordance with the Rules - the highest ranked drawn match would continue with a sudden death playoff.
Craig Avery (Toronto) birdied the first hole on the playoff to defeat Eli Richardson (Waratah) - resulting in Toronto remaining in Division 1 with Waratah being the team relegated to Division 2.
A very close and exciting series.
Things were just as close in Division 2 - with 5 teams all vying for the 2 finals spots..
Clear big wins to Hawks Nest, Muree and Shortland Waters - saw Hawks Nest and Muree leapfrog previous leaders Pacific Dunes to secure places in the Final.
Shortland Waters showed some improvement this year to finish a close third with Pacific Dunes.
Therefore our finalists will be -
Division 1 Newcastle and Charlestown
Division 2 - Hawks Nest and Muree
The venue for the final is TBC
